Munnar
is a small town located at
10.09° North and 77.06° East in Idukki district, of the southern state
of Kerala in India. The name is most often used to refer to the whole
tourist area, of which the town forms a part. Munnar is almost full of
tea estates and has thick forest cover. In fact, the entire area is
known as the Kannan Devan Hills, from which the famous brand of the
Tata's gets its name.
During the British rule of India, Munnar was developed to cultivate tea
plants. It is also believed that Munnar was a favourite place for those
of the British who were in the know and it is
sometimes referred to as the 'Switzerland
of India' for its natural surroundings and
Old World architecture.
In 2000, the Government of Kerala declared Munnar as a tourist spot.
This has helped in attracting more tourists to the place. The unending
dominance of the tea plantations and the
mountain flower Neelakkurinji that bloom
once in 12 years are both synonymous landmarks of
Munnar.
Thekkady (Idukki district)
is the location of the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, which is an
important tourist attraction in Kerala state, India, close to
the Kerala -TamilNadu border town Kumily, located about 160
miles from Trivandrum. The sanctuary is famous for its dense
evergreen, semi evergreen, moist deciduous forests and savannah
grass lands. It is home to herds of elephants, sambar, tigers,
gaur, lion-tailed macaques and Nilgiri langurs.
The Periyar Wildlife sanctuary is spread across 777kms, of which
360kms is thick evergreen forest. The Periyar Wild Life
Sanctuary was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978. The splendid
artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the
Periyar River adds to the charm of the park. The greatest
attraction of Periyar are the herds of wild elephants that come
down to play in the lake.
Thekkady has immense possibilities for Adventure Tourism. The
Forest Department offers many programs including Periyar Tiger
Trail, Nature walk, Bamboo Rafting etc. |
