  • From 18 November 2018, eligible tourists in the UAE will be able to request refunds on the Value Added Tax (VAT) incurred on their purchases while there are in the UAE. Only tax invoices issued from 18 November 2018 will qualify eligible tourists to reclaim taxes on their purchases.
  • Tourists will receive their refunds through a special device placed at the departure port – airport, seaport, or border port – by submitting the tax invoices of your purchases from the outlets registered in the Scheme, along with copies of your passport and credit card.
  • Once the documents are submitted, you can either recover the VAT in cash in UAE dirhams, or have it transferred to your credit card.
  • For you to claim VAT refund on purchases you made in the UAE, you must fulfill certain conditions:
    • Goods must be purchased from a retailer who is participating in the ‘Tax Refund for Tourists Scheme’.
    • Goods are not excluded from the Refund Scheme of the Federal Tax Authority.
    • You must have the explicit intention to leave the UAE in 90 days from the date of supply, along with the purchased supplies.

While most restaurants will note at the bottom of the menu that taxes and service charge have already been included in the bill, it is still common among most diners in Dubai to tip the service staff. A figure between 10 and 15 per cent is customary, but this is dependent on the quality of service.

Electricity supply is 220/240 volts at 50 cycles. Plug points are the same as in the UK. To operate US-made appliances and equipment, you’ll need a transformer to convert the 220V to 110V and an adaptor for the plugs.
